Moyamensing Reservoir is a reservoir and flood control lake in the northwest section of the city of Philadelphia in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It was created in 1974 by converting four tributaries of the Moyamensing Creek into a 24.7-acre artificial lake. The lake is surrounded by park lands and a picnic area.
History
The original source of the Moyamensing Creek was the same as the name, a stream called ‘Moyamensing’. However, as the city and neighborhood grew, so did its water needs. In 1763, the North Market Company received a three acre tract for a reservoir. The construction of the reservoir was completed in 1859 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1876, the reservoir was renamed after Dr. Henry Moyamensing, a physician. With the silting of the Lake and the new desires to develop land, it was determined that the reservoir could and should be enlarged. To enlarge, a small section of land between two large tributary of the Moyamensing Creek, the Herring Run and the Brandy Run, was dug down and flooded, creating the Lake. A boat house was built in 1885 and the lake was named after it. After the enlargement of the Lake, the land had to be leveled to create a smooth surface. A crushed stone base was spread and gravel was packed. The area was then filled with top soil and grass was planted. The lake was named in honor of all Philadelphia citizens. In 1891, the city installed the first electric gate to control access to the area, to help prevent damage to the park’s grass. The gate was in use until 1967. The grand opening of the new reservoir was in 1936. In 1986, the canal leading from the reservoir to the Delaware River was refurbished and re-plumbed, keeping it in use for flood control and additional recreational purposes. The canal still remains in use, although the water gates have long been removed. Water levels and shorelines also continue to be monitored.
